Charity Barge Rowing Event at Greenland Dock

Charity Barge Rowing Event at Greenland Dock

3rd and 4th May 2014

On Saturday 3rd & Sunday 4th May 2014 Greenland Dock in Rotherhithe will be playing host to a special Charity Barge Rowing Event. This Charity Event is open to all comers with or without any rowing experience, each barge will be crewed by five people and all must be over 16 years old. A course will be laid in the dock, which is non-tidal, the course will be approximately 1000yds. The barges weigh up to 30 tonnes and no more than three crew members can row at any one time, using 20 foot oars. This was the traditional method of moving cargo around the docks and the tidal Thames until the closure of the London Docks in the 1970s.
This is a Charity Event to raise funds for; A local Southwark man, David Wallace who tragically passed away a few months ago leaving a wife and a young family. Dave was highly respected and commended by the government for his work at F.A. Alibin & Sons, in repatriation of fallen service personnel from Afghanistan.

A fellow waterman, Michael Russell, who had a very serious accident on the River Thames early 2013 and is going through a long recovery period, Michael has a very young family who need all the help we can give to them. Both families are very worthy causes.

There will be three barges per heat, each team will row two laps, the first lap will be practice and training, the second lap will be timed, the fastest barge will progress to the next heat. There will be an experienced Thames Waterman aboard each barge to assist and guide the crews.

This Charity Event will take place over two days with the final heats being held on the Sunday.

Facilities at the Water Sports Centre include; changing rooms, toilets, showers, there will be hot and cold food and a licensed bar available. Free parking in the area is very good, with excellent viewing of the event around the edge of the Greenland Dock.

Entry for the Event will close on the 28th April; the entry fee for each team is £250.00, which covers crew training and all of the Event heats.
